(P214) Training the Next Generation of Diabetes Advocates While Bringing Awareness in Far West Texas

The prevalence of diabetes in the United States is 11%, while in El Paso, Texas, located on the US-Mexico border, the prevalence is 15%. This poster shows how, in response to this disparity, the University of Texas at El Paso developed the Diabetes Awareness Training Program for Community Outreach. The program prepares undergraduate students in Public Health to deliver community presentations with evidence-based information on diabetes, nutrition, and physical activity, while incorporating adult learning and communication techniques. The presentation provides participants with a QR code linked to diabetes community resources, a platform developed by Paso Del Norte Health Foundation. The program addresses the need for raising diabetes awareness while fostering student advocates to create a bridge to local resources.
