(D32) Weekly Basal Insulins: New Tools for Diabetes Management
Sunday, August 9, 2026
3:45 PM - 4:30 PM ET
CE: .75 CE
Pharmacology Hours: .75 CE
This is an encore presentation originally presented on Friday, August 7, from 11:15 AM–12:00 PM. If you attended that session, please select a different session during this time block.
There are 2 weekly insulins that have been developed but are awaiting FDA approval for use in the U.S. We will review the icodec and efsitora molecules, how they achieve ultra-long pharmacokinetics differently, and review their published phase 3 data. We will also review my poster presentation on subset analysis of QWINT trials, analyzing the safety of efsitora with and without concomitant GLP-1RA use. Knowing about these basal insulins and reviewing case studies will highlight potential use cases of weekly Insulin as well as discuss possible clinical concerns of ultra-long acting insulins in certain clinical scenarios.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Learn about the weekly insulins with published phase 3 study data including how they are able to achieve weekly pharmacokinetics.
Learn about risks and benefits of weekly insulin compared to currently available basal insulin.
Consider potential use cases for weekly Insulin if/when they become available for use in the U.S. market.
