Hearing loss from gestational diabetes can affect speech, language and auditory processing development in infants (this is also true for late onset of hearing loss). For all adults diagnosed with diabetes, hearing loss can create a disconnect from family and friends and can alter one’s life goals. Once identified, this ‘silent side effect’ of diabetes can be managed by DCESs and audiologists working together to provide short- and long-term guidance. Attendees will learn who is at risk for hearing loss, prevalence of hearing loss, tests used to identify hearing loss in infants and adults as well as learning proven management strategies.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Understand the pathophysiology of hearing loss during and after pregnancy in the newborn and mother.
Recognize the symptoms of hearing loss in infants and adults and how to find an audiologist who can assist you.
Learn how to effectively manage patients (with the help of an audiologist) if hearing loss is identified.
