(D15) Integrating the ADA Standards of Care in Obesity Into Diabetes Education and Care

Obesity is a prevalent, chronic disease that significantly impacts cardiometabolic health and diabetes outcomes. This session reviews the ADA Standards of Care in Obesity, emphasizing evidence-based, person-centered management across the continuum of care. Participants will examine core principles of obesity assessment and diagnosis, lifestyle interventions as the foundation of treatment, and the appropriate use of pharmacologic and surgical therapies. Special attention will be given to special populations, comorbidities, and socioeconomic factors that influence treatment selection and long-term success. Through an interactive patient case, attendees will apply guideline-directed strategies to support individualized, equitable, and sustainable obesity care within diabetes education and clinical practice.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Describe the core principles of evidence-based obesity management across the continuum of care.
  • Compare lifestyle, pharmacologic, and surgical interventions for obesity, including considerations for special populations and socioeconomic factors.
  • Apply ADA-aligned obesity treatment strategies to a patient case to support individualized, patient-centered care.
