Total pancreatectomy creates one of the most complex forms of diabetes, with abrupt insulin dependence, loss of glucagon, exocrine insufficiency, and frequent transitions between oncology, surgery, and endocrinology care. Most patients receive only fragmented, late diabetes education, often after they are already struggling with severe hypo- and hyperglycemia at home. This project was designed to close that gap by moving structured DSMES upstream into the preoperative period and tightly embedding it into the surgical care pathway. Our quality improvement initiative focused on adults undergoing total pancreatectomy at a comprehensive cancer center, a population that faces layered challenges of cancer treatment, major surgery, and lifelong insulin-dependent diabetes. The session will describe our research questions around whether an intensive CDCES-led education pathway can support safer transitions, more effective self-management, and greater use of diabetes technology in this high-risk group. Attendees will learn the structure and content of our six-module, hybrid educational curriculum, delivered preoperatively and in the early postoperative phase. We will also describe key implementation elements such as workflow mapping, timing of education visits, documentation standards, and multidisciplinary collaboration between CDCES, endocrinology, and surgical oncology. br /> Complete list of authors of the research with names, credentials, and institutional affiliations (a list of authors of the research, not a list of presenters).: Dr. Samina Asfandiyar, DNP APRN, FNP- C, MD Anderson Cancer Center.
