Amid rising diabetes prevalence and persistent gaps in access to DSMES, many programs face challenges in staffing and sustaining high-quality diabetes self-management education. This session will describe the NYC Health Department’s initiative to recruit, train, and empower existing staff through structured professional development and technology-based coaching that prepare them to confidently facilitate DSMES group classes in neighborhoods with the highest diabetes prevalence. Attendees will learn how investing in workforce development not only strengthens DSMES delivery but also enhances staff engagement, career growth, and the overall quality of diabetes services.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Identify innovative team-based models for DSMES program delivery.
Apply new strategies for training and supporting DSMES team members.
Discuss professional development and career pathways available to DSMES team members.
