Type 2 diabetes is increasing in prevalence in youth with a greater severity of comorbidities than those seen in persons diagnosed in adulthood. This presentation focuses on the role of nutrition in prevention and management with and without medication for children and adolescents with T2D. Many health disparities exist for this population, including health care inequity, and psychosocial economic disadvantages. Best clinical practices from evidence-based guidelines and standards of care will be used to address health care disparities. Real clinical examples using these guidelines show how a nutrition intervention can have a life-long impact on the health of this underserved, disadvantaged population as they enter adulthood and self-care.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Understand the disease process of T2D and the risk of adverse co-morbidities in our pediatric and adolescent populations.
Recognize the health care disparities which may contribute to the disease progression of T2D in our youth.
Identify the nutrition strategies and guidelines to prevent adverse complications in our youth with T2D.
