(S03) Implementing Continuous Glucose Monitoring as Hospital-Wide Standard of Care

While CGM has transformed outpatient care, inpatient glucose management has changed little over the past 40 years, remaining reliant on point-of-care (POC) testing. Pandemic-era emergency use generated clinical and research evidence demonstrating safe hospital CGM use, yet CGM has not received inpatient FDA approval. Over the past five years, The Ohio State University has sustained an inpatient CGM program, culminating in 2025 approval of CGM as standard of care in all ICUs. This session presents a practical, evidence-based blueprint for inpatient CGM adoption. Participants will learn how hybrid CGM–POC protocols enable safe implementation, with emphasis on workflow design, staff education, protocol development, and program scalability.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

Summarize clinical evidence supporting inpatient CGM use across ICU and non-ICU settings, including impacts on hypoglycemia detection, time-in-range, and workflow.
Describe a scalable hybrid CGM implementation model, including validation, calibration, alarm management, and documentation strategies.
Apply an implementation blueprint to support hospital-wide CGM adoption, in collaboration with nursing, pharmacy, and medical teams.
