(S29) Beyond Glycemia: Psychosocial Considerations for GLP-1 Therapy

GLP-1 therapies can affect patients’ mental health in both positive and challenging ways, and CDCESs are seeing these effects in practice. For many individuals with diabetes, GLP-1 use is a biopsychosocial experience shaped by medication-related effects mixed with expectations and emotions influenced by public discourse. These factors often surface during diabetes education and counseling encounters and can affect engagement with care. This session will review current research on both positive and negative mental health implications of GLP-1 therapies, explore how these dynamics commonly present in practice, and provide practical strategies CDCESs can use within their scope of practice to support patients and identify when referral or interdisciplinary collaboration is warranted.
