(F14) Glycemic Strategies for PET/CT Scan Preparation in People with Diabetes and Cancer

Elevated glucose and insulin levels interfere with tracer uptake used in PET/CT scans, resulting in false negative, confounded images, and delayed treatment. Although guidelines exist, recommendations for patient preparation and thresholds for rescheduling tests vary. People living with diabetes are six times more likely to develop cancer than individuals without diabetes. DCESs are key members of the healthcare team and can provide education and guidance to patients and clinicians on patient preparation prior to PET/CT imaging.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

Explain the impact of hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia on PET/CT scan accuracy and adequacy.
Summarize evidenced based guidelines--EANM & ACR--recommendations for PET/CT imaging preparation for persons with diabetes.
Apply pharmacotherapy considerations to case studies representing insulin-treated and non-insulin treated persons with diabetes.
