(P212) Social Vulnerability Index and Preventable Diabetes-Related Hospitalizations in the United States

Social factors play a vital role in health outcomes. Unfortunately, their impact on preventable diabetes-related hospitalizations (PDRH) has not been widely studied or documented. This poster discusses a study that aims to investigate the relationship between the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) and PDRH in the United States. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional analysis using data from 2020-2022 for adults aged 20 years and older across 48 states in the United States. County-level SVI data from the CDC, which is based on 16 indicators related to socioeconomic status, household characteristics, racial and ethnic minority status, housing type, and transportation, were linked to risk-adjusted PDRH rates. The counties were categorized into four SVI quartiles to assess whether a higher social vulnerability was associated with increased hospitalization rates. This helped to identify disparities related to selected diabetes outcomes. The poster authors provide details on their research design, including the population studied and the methodology for linking and analyzing the data. This work will inform the relevance of policies and measures that reduce disparities in diabetes care and outcomes in the United States.
