(D26) When Blood Pressure Won’t Budge: Managing Resistant Hypertension in People with Diabetes

Hypertension and diabetes frequently coexist and together markedly increase cardiovascular and kidney risk, making blood pressure management a cornerstone of diabetes care. This session prepares DCESs to identify, classify, and manage complex hypertension in people with diabetes using new recommendations from the 2025 American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association’s Hypertension Guideline. Attendees will learn a practical approach to differentiating resistant from secondary hypertension, including appropriate indications for screening for secondary causes. The session will also review recent clinical trial data and guideline updates to support individualized blood pressure targets and evidence-based treatment strategies for optimizing blood pressure management in people with diabetes.
