(S17) Navigating Natural Medicine in Diabetes Today: Popular Therapies, Evidence, and Counseling Strategies

People with diabetes frequently use natural medicines and dietary supplements alongside conventional therapies, often without discussing them with their healthcare team. This session provides DCESs with practical, evidence-based guidance to confidently address natural medicine use in diabetes care. Participants will review commonly used herbs, supplements, and nutraceuticals in T2D, with emphasis on efficacy, safety, quality considerations, and potential drug–supplement interactions. Current clinical evidence, guideline perspectives, and research gaps will be discussed. Through practical counseling strategies and clinical scenarios, attendees will strengthen skills in patient-centered communication, shared decision-making, and safe integration of natural medicine within individualized diabetes care plans.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Identify commonly used natural medicines, supplements, and nutraceuticals among people with T2D.
  • Evaluate the clinical evidence, safety considerations, quality concerns, and potential drug–supplement interactions associated with these therapies.
  • Apply patient-centered counseling strategies to support respectful communication, shared decision-making, and safe integration of natural medicine into individualized care plans.
