This research project addresses gaps in access to ongoing diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) for adults with T2D, particularly for individuals who face barriers to traditional, in-person education or require continued support beyond clinical encounters. Although social media platforms are increasingly used for health communication, there is limited synthesis examining how these technologies can be intentionally integrated into DSMES to support core educational outcomes relevant to DCESs.
This session shares a synthesis of research exploring how social media–based DSMES interventions are designed and implemented for adults with T2D across diverse populations. The presentation focuses on the research questions guiding the review, the populations studied, and the use of social media platforms as technology-enabled extensions of DSMES. Interventions examined include professionally facilitated group-based education delivered through commonly used social media platforms, incorporating structured educational content, interactive engagement, and ongoing communication. Attendees will gain insight into how these interventions are positioned to support diabetes education delivery in varied practice settings.
