CE: .75 CE
Persons with T1D are often diagnosed early in life and thus navigate glucose levels through life milestones, including childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and late adulthood. This session will review the nutrition strategies and guidelines for evaluating challenges in glycemic variability and outcomes during each phase in life, including growth in childhood, puberty during adolescence, co-morbidity prevention in adulthood, and increased coexisting illnesses with possible functional disability in later adulthood. Nutrition strategies and guidelines to help deal with challenges during transitional care will be addressed, including preparing adolescents for adult self-care; loss of independence and geriatric syndrome in later adulthood.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Understand the disease process of T1D and effect of physical changes on glycemic variability during life milestones.
Recognize the importance of nutrition strategies during transitional care in the lifespan from adolescence to adulthood to later adulthood.
Know the strategies and guidelines for best nutrition practices to prevent adverse outcomes during each stage in life.
