Childhood obesity is shaped by complex medical, behavioral, family, and social determinants that limit a child’s ability to adopt and sustain healthy behaviors. Barriers such as food insecurity, transportation challenges, limited health literacy, caregiver burden, and behavioral health needs can reduce engagement despite motivation. This session describes the WellKids 8-week multidisciplinary pediatric program integrating nutrition education, physical activity, behavioral health, medical screening, and family-based skill building through community and healthcare partnerships to reduce long-term diabetes risk. Attendees will learn to identify participation barriers, apply family-centered strategies to improve retention and outcomes, integrate behavioral health and physical readiness screening, and strengthen referral pathways and regional collaboration in culturally diverse, resource-limited settings.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Describe the roles and responsibilities of interdisciplinary care team members within an evidence-based multidisciplinary pediatric obesity intervention model.
Apply evidence-based, family-centered, and social determinants–informed strategies to improve engagement, retention, and outcomes in youth wellness programs.
Demonstrate how to integrate behavioral health screening, physical readiness assessments, and community referrals into coordinated pediatric care pathways.
