(P204) Family Income and Health Measures in Adults with Diabetes: An NHANES Study 2007-2020

Diabetes imposes substantial psychological and social burdens. Several previous studies indicated that individuals with social risk factors tend to experience poorer diabetes outcomes, suggesting a correlation between social determinants of health and these results. However, no study has been done using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey datasets to explore the association between family income and depression severity mediated by glycemic levels. This poster presents a cross-sectional analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2020, investigating the associations between family income status and key health outcomes, particularly glycemic levels and depression severity, among adults diagnosed with diabetes in the United States. Employing logistic regression modeling, the study examines the odds ratios of individuals achieving well-managed diabetes (HbA1c < 8%) and minimal depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 < 4) across various income-to-poverty ratio categories, while controlling for demographic and socioeconomic covariates. This research contributes to the accumulating body of evidence suggesting that socioeconomic factors, while of paramount importance, do not function independently. Instead, broader social determinants of health—including educational attainment, healthcare accessibility, and insurance status—likely intersect with income to influence health disparities in diabetes management. This poster aims to initiate a dialogue about the multifaceted nature of health disparities. It encourages DCESs to consider structural and contextual influences when addressing the needs of people with diabetes. The insights gained can inform the development of more comprehensive and targeted interventions that support individuals with diabetes regardless of their socioeconomic status.
