Cancer cells take up and metabolize more glucose than non-malignant tissue. Unlike glucose, the radioisotope F-18fluorodeoxyglucose, a glucose analog, accumulates intracellularly, allowing visualization on a scan--the “hot spots”. Accurate imaging facilitates cancer diagnosis and staging. Patient preparation is paramount as hyperglycemia & insulin administration influence glucose and tracer uptake. Those with T1D must inject insulin for normal metabolism, without which there is a risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). The rate at which DKA develops is multifactorial; it’s a balancing act in the best of times. How does one manage the absolute need for insulin without confounding the images? This poster explores glycemic management for T1D when preparing for a PET scan.
